Wontons in Chili Oil

Wontons in Chili Oil

What’s the first dish that comes to mind when you think of comfort food? For some this may be fried chicken, risotto, chicken noodle soup – but once you’ve tried this recipe, these wontons will quickly jump to the top of that list. The filling is so easy and simple with only 5 ingredients, and are amazing on their own. However, the chili oil (which is equally as easy to make) elevates this dish to the next level. It isn’t as spicy as you would think, and the shallots give the oil that comforting garlicky taste. The most labor intensive part of this dish is assembling the wontons – I suggest putting on some music and grabbing a friend to help, and in no time you’ll have 40-50 wontons ready to boil or deep fry. For this recipe, I will be boiling the wontons, as I like to save them for wonton soup (recipe coming soon).

A few tips:

  • In my opinion, there is no right or wrong way to make a wonton, there are so many variations of shapes. If you google image “wontons” you will have proof of this.
  • Making your chili oil ahead of time will allow for a deeper, richer flavor. You can also double this recipe to make an even larger batch to store for later use – it pairs well with so many things!

Ingredients
  • For the Wontons:
  • 1 pound organic ground chicken
  • 2 green onion stalks - chopped
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or Tamari
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • A dash of white pepper
  • 1 pkg wonton wrappers
  • For the Chili Oil:
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1 tbsp chili flakes
  • 1 small shallot - finely chopped
Directions
  • Step 1 Mix together ground chicken, soy sauce, green onions, sesame oil, and white pepper
  • Step 2 Scoop about a tablespoon of the mixture onto the wonton wrapper
  • Step 3 Dip your finger in water and run along the edges of the wonton wrapper (this helps to make it adhere)
  • Step 4 First fold the wonton from bottom to top, sealing along all edges
  • Step 5 Next, grab the bottom two edges and bring together, adhering with water
  • Step 6 Once all wontons are made, boil in water for about 3-5 minutes, until thoroughly cooked
  • Step 7 While your wontons are boiling, add a small amount of your oil to a sauce pan with the chili flakes and shallots, wait until they begin to sizzle (releasing the flavor) and then add the rest of the oil. Warm for about 2 minutes, and then set aside
  • Step 8 Top your boiled wontons with the chili oil and serve immediately
